LADY EAGLES FALL SHORT TO ELYRIA, LOSE BY 8

By Staff
ELYRIA – After dealing with weather earlier in the week, the Canton/Galva girls basketball team took to the road on Friday to play Elyria Christian where they lost a grip on an early lead and lost 36-44.
The Lady Eagles had a powerful first quarter, leading 16-9 before only scoring five points in quarter two and falling behind 21-27 by the time they reached the halftime break. Elyria then outscored Canton/Galva 18-15 in the final two quarters to hand the Lady Eagles the final eight-point loss.

“We played a really solid opening quarter,” noted Canton/Galva head coach David Ediger. “Our offense was good and our defensive intensity was strong. The second quarter our defense let us down, giving them 17 points that included a wide open three-pointer at the buzzer to give Elyria the five-point halftime advantage. In the second half, we could not find any consistency offensively so we could not close the gap.”
The Lady Eagles were led by Trinity Espinoza who hit three three-pointers in scoring 11 points while Rae Hawkinson also reached double digits with 10.
Despite forcing Elyria into making 32 turnovers, the Lady Eagles turned the ball over 24 times themselves.
Coach Ediger concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “Overall, we caused them to turn the ball over a lot. We will have to do a better job the entire game of converting turnover’s like that into points. Our poor free throw shooting also cost us tonight.”
Now 3-5 on the season, the Lady Eagles return to action on Tuesday, January 14 on the road at Solomon.
