LADY EAGLES OPEN SEASON WITH 50-19 WIN

By Staff
CANTON – Under a new coach with a new playing system, the Canton/Galva girls’ basketball program began the 2024/25 season with a resounding defeat at home over Rural Vista, winning by 31-points, 50-19.
Having been a winner at three former high schools, Lady Eagle head coach David Ediger noted the importance of the first game, saying, “I thought for the first game of the season under a new coach, the girls did a lot of really good things. After Rural Vista came out in a defense we did not plan for, the girls adjusted the offense the right way.”

Canton/Galva jumped out to a solid 11-5 lead by the end of the first quarter before rolling out to a 23-7 lead at the halftime break. After coming out and pushing to advantage to 28 points at 37-9 by the end of the third quarter, the Lady Eagles rolled in for the final 31-point victory.
Speaking of their defense, coach Ediger explained, “Overall, our defense was really good. We held them to just nine points over the first three quarters, which is outstanding. We still have work to do so we do not foul as much, but that is an easy fix with proper positioning.”
Freshman Faith McMannis led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 12 points while Trinity Espinoza hit for 11 points thanks to three three-pointers, and MaKinlee Hoppes also reached double digits with 10 points.
The Lady Eagles played the game with just six players as Rae Hawkinson and Jordan Elliot did not play due to injuries.
Coach Ediger concluded his reflections on the first game of the season by adding, “This game showed us a lot of things we need to clean up moving forward, but I really liked the effort the girls showed. We got really good play out of everyone tonight and ended the game with many positives to build on moving forward. The thing I liked the most was the competitiveness the team showed.”
Up next for the Lady Eagles will be to play Class 1A Division I powerhouse Little River on Monday, December 9 in the first round of the Goessel Bluebird Classic.
