GOESSEL – Despite playing without starting quarterback Jaxon Chrislip, the Canton/Galva youthful football team put together a solid game on Friday and came home from a road trip to Goessel with an eight-point, 32-24 victory.

Chrislip, out with a concussion, was replaced by the tandem of Brennan Copple and Bransyn Speer. Speer was the one  who  put the Eagles  on the board in the first quarter with a three-yard scoring run.

The Eagle held the 8-0 lead until the  third quarter when Goessel returned  an interception for a score to pull within two at 8-6. Camden Kruse closed out the third quarter with a six-yard touchdown and after the two-point conversion pass  from Brennan Copple to Ethan Brozek, the Eagles took a commanding 16-6 advantage into the fourth quarter.

After Canton/Galva increased their lead to 24-6 early in the fourth on an eight-yard run by Brozek, Goessel took to the air and completed three straight scoring passes covering 53-, 50-, and 23-yards to tie the game at 24-24.

But the young Eagles took on the challenge and drove down to the three where Noah Collins scored, and Kruse  ran for a two-point conversion to give  them the  final 32-24 advantage and win.

The Eagles gained 268 yards in total offense with 191 coming on a dominating running  attack. Canton/Galva helped themselves by converting seven-of-nine  fourth down opportunities.

Copple and Speer combined to complete nine-of-seventeen passes for 77 yards with Copple throwing a pair of interceptions. Brozek was the favorite receiver, catching eight  of the nine completions for 68 yards.

On the  ground, Speer led the Eagles with 55 yards on 16 carries. Noah Collins pitched  in with 45 yards on12 totes and Ty Herrera, Ethan Brozek, and Camden Kruse all ran for over 20 yards with 29, 28, and 25, respectively.

On defense, Goessel may have put up 145 yards passing, but  most of that came in the  fourth quarter. The Eagle’s shutdown the Goessel running attack, allowing just 29 yards rushing. Wyatt Henry led the defense with five tackles.

Now 3-5 for the season after breaking a four-game losing streak, the Eagles close out the 2024 season on Friday in Downs playing Lakeside.
