YOUTHFUL EAGLES STUMBLE, LOSE TO ELL-SALINE
By Staff
CANTON – With a shortened week of practice, injuries added to a youthful roster of players, the Canton/Galva football team held its own for a quarter before being humbled in a 46-0 home field loss to fifth ranked Ell-Saline on Friday.
“For the most part I was happy with how we played,” pointed out Eagle head coach Ted Reghr. “They were bigger, more experienced, and physical than we were, but we came out and competed. The boys fought to the very end of the game.”
It was a solid first quarter for Canton/Galva as they held the 8-Man Division I fifth-ranked Cardinals to just 16 points before Ell-Saline poured 36 points on the board in the second quarter.
“We made them put together a couple of long drives and held them to just 16 points in the first quarter,” noted coach Reghr. “We had some success moving the ball and got down in the red zone one time but then had a crucial penalty and could never find the end zone.”
Jaxon Chrislip threw for 70 yards on offense for the Eagles as they netted just 78 yards in total offense on 27 offensive plays.
On just 26 offensive plays, the Cardinals put 187 yards up on the Eagles defense. Both Wyatt Henry and Chrislip led the defense with 3.5 tackles each.
As he concluded his post-game reflections, coach Reghr added, “The injury bug hit us, and we were down a pair of starters, so we had to put several new guys in. I was proud of the team effort across the board as we are finally starting to do the things we are coaching them to do. It is just going to take more time and game-time playing experience to get where we want to be.”
Now 2-2 on the season, the Eagles will play host on Friday to the third-ranked and unbeaten Little River Redskins.
