EAGLES SPLIT TWO AT HERRINGTON

By Staff
HERRINGTON – On Tuesday, the Canton/Galva boys’ and girls’ basketball teams traveled to Herrington where they split a pair of games with the boys winning by 27 and the girls losing by 12.

The Eagle boys jumped all over Herrington in the first quarter and held an eight-point, 17-9, lead before pushing the advantage to 12 points, 28-16, at the halftime break. Coming out for the third quarter, Canton/Galva poured 25 points on the board to take a commanding 26-point, 53-27, lead into the final quarter where they settled in for the final 27-point, 68-41 victory.
Both Jaxon Nightingale and Ethan Brozek had outstanding nights offensively with Nightingale leading the team with 22 points and Brozek making five three-pointers on the way to finishing with 21 points. Kustom Schamp also reached double digits in the scorebook with 12.
For the Lady Eagles, they were tied 4-4 at the end of the first quarter and only down by two, 10-12, at the halftime break before Herrington put 26 points on the board in the final two quarters while holding Canton/Galva to just 16 in giving the Lady Eagles the final 12-point, 26-38 loss.
“We did not come ready to play and it showed from the start,” noted Lady Eagle head coach David Ediger. “We had no energy all game and yet, as bas as we played, we were only down four going into the fourth quarter where we let them hit a few open three’s and that was the difference.”
Faith McMannis led the team in scoring with 12 points as they played without Rae Hawkinson and Brynn Kruse, both out injured.
Ediger finished off his post-game comments by adding, “Our defense has been outstanding lately, but it was not in the fourth quarter when we needed it to be. Playing without both Rae (Hawkinson) and Brynn (Kruse) hurt, but that is no excuse for how we played.”
The Lady Eagles are now 7-7 for the season while the Eagle boys are 7-6. Both teams will be hosting Linn on Friday while the Eagle boys were scheduled to play host to Peabody/Burns on Thursday.
