C/G EAGLES END SEASON WITH LOSS

Lose to Montezuma/South Gray, 43-79

COLBY – After the excitement of getting an upset win at sub-state to earn a spot at the Class 1A Division I state tournament, the Canton/Galva boys season came to an abrupt stop on Wednesday with a 43-79 loss to top seed Montezuma/South Gray County  in the first round of the state tournament.

With the loss, the Eagles finished the season 12-12.

The Eagles looked solid in the first quarter as they took a four-point, 16-12 lead before the Rebels put 20 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter to take a nine-point lead, 23-32, into the halftime break.

Unable to stop the Rebels senior forward, Joseph Dyck, Canton/Galva fell behind by 30, 29-59, by the end of the third quarter before South Gray closed out the 36-point victory.

Joseph Dyck, a six-foot senior forward hit the Eagles for 25 points including nine in the third quarter as South Gray moves to 22-2 and were scheduled to play fifth seed Olpe on Friday after Olpe upset Clifton/Clyde.

For the Eagles,  Wyatt Collins closed out his final season by scoring a team high 17 points which included making three three-pointers. Eight Canton/Galva players put at least two points in the scorebook during the game.

Despite the loss, Eagle head coach Larry O’Connor had some positives to say during his reflections on the season as he noted,  “I really enjoyed this season. The kids came to practice every day and we got better throughout the season and peaked at the right time. Our seniors led us with great leadership, and I will seriously miss them all. Making a state tournament jumps us into having a great summer and have our goals to get back next year while taking it further.”
