BULLPUPS LOSE ON LAST SECOND SCORE

Wellington Pulls out Win, 23-21

MCPHERSON – It may have been a while since such bad luck struck the McPherson football program as they lost to Wellington at home Friday when the visitors scored with just two seconds left to play in the game.

After taking a 7-3 lead in the first quarter on a Blaize Hoover touchdown catch from Owen Fetsch, the Bullpups went up 14-3 briefly in the second quarter on a another short, three-yard scoring pass by Owen Fetsch, this time to Jayce Schriner.

Wellington powered back and stung McPherson with a 22-yard interception return for a score followed by a 10-yard scoring pass play to take a 17-14 lead into the halftime break.

Carlos German pounded into the end zone from a yard out in the third quarter and with a Hoover extra point kick retook the lead at 21-17 heading into the final quarter where the Bullpup defense held up until the final play of the gam when the Crusaders scored on a short four-yard pass play to earn the final 23-21 win.

Wellington kept the Bullpup defense busy as they ran 74 offensive plays which rolled up 270 yards of which 208 came through the air. The Bullpups only ran 47 plays for 156 yards as they were held to just 57 yards rushing the ball.

Owen Fetsch, the Bullpups senior quarterback, had a rough night, completing only seven of 16 passes for 65 yards and threw three interceptions. The power running attack of Carlos German and Isaac Barnett only covered 53 yards on 23 carries combined.

Now 3-3 for the season, the Bullpups will look to get back to the win column next Friday on the road at Mulvane. The Wildcats are also 3-3 on the season but are riding a three-game losing streak after losing 27-9 to Winfield on Friday.
