TOWANDA – The McPherson football team evened out their season mark to 2-2 on Friday while in Towanda where they held off a stubborn Circle team for a 32-16 win.

Cory Muehler got the Bullpups on the scoreboard in the first quarter when he took a pass from Owen Fetsch and raced into the end zone from 11 yards out. Blaise Hoover then made good on the first of three extra-point kicks to give McPherson an early 7-0 lead.

Carlos German barreled in from three yards in the second quarter which was followed by a Hoover 27-yard field goal to give the Bullpups a comfortable 17-0 advantage at the halftime break.

Isaac Barnett broke loose for a 54-yard sprint to paydirt in the third quarter and then Bullpup quarterback Owen Fetsch connected with Hoover on a 15-yard score in the early moments of the fourth quarter to give the Bullpups a commanding 32-0 lead.

Circle then took advantage of Bullpup backups to score twice in the fourth quarter to make the final score closer than it really should have been at 32-16.

Circle ran more plays than McPherson, 70 to 62, but only covered 260 yards while the Bullpups totaled 317 in offense for the game.

It was the Bullpup defense that stymied the Thunderbirds as they forced five turnovers, including a pair of fumbles and three interceptions, two by Jayce Schriner. Teegan Haines led the offense with nine total tackles including a pair for a loss of yardage while Chase Koehn recorded ten tackles and had a pair of sacks to go with three causing a loss of yards.

Offensively, Owen Fetsch threw for 132 yards while Carlos German rambled for 116 yards on 16 carries and Isaac Barnett ran for another 94 on nine totes. Blaise Hoover caught four passes for 68 yards to top the six Bullpups who had a catch in the game.

The Bullpups will play host to Winfield on Friday, September 29. Winfield is 1-3 for the season and lost their third straight game Friday 41-7 to Buhler.
