NEWTON – On Saturday, the McPherson cross country teams ran at the Newton Invitational and came home with a fifth-place finish for the Bullpup boys and a sixth-place finish for the Lady Bullpups while earning three individual medals as well.

Caleb Muehler led the Bullpup boys with a spectacular run of 16:27 which was good enough for second out of 86 runners while Ethan Elder ran a solid 17:04 and placed seventh, winning them both medals. Both Garrett Floyd (24th) and Kayden Friesen (39th) also finished in the top half of the runners.

As a team, the McPherson boys finished fifth overall with 146 points, running behind invite champion Dodge City (70), Wamego (79) Andover Central (120) and Maize South (142).

“Both teams ran really strong races today in warm temperatures and windy conditions,” noted cross country head coach Nikolous Rempe. “Despite the weather, nearly half of the team ran season best times. Most importantly, we competed well against teams we will be seeing in upcoming weeks during the postseason runs.”

For the Lady Bullpups, they placed sixth with 135 points, as Maize South (50), Andover (54), Liberal (81), Valley Center (119), and Dodge City (131) finished as the top five teams.

Lexi Patterson ran a 21:39 which earned her a medal for finishing fourteenth. Eva Ramey Reesa Whorton, Kayla Porter, and Ashlyn Schroeder all finished in the top half of the 74 runners competing.

Next up for the Bullpup cross country runners will be on Saturday, October 7 at El Dorado for a 14-team Invitational.
