WIN 57-10, FETSCH THROWS 4 TDS

By Staff

AUGUSTA – It was a nice bounce back from a week one loss for the McPherson High football team on Friday as they traveled to Augusta and passed their way to a 57-10 win.

Now 1-1 on the season, the Bullpups will finally make their 2023 season home debut next Friday when they play host to Junction City. Junction City will come into the game 1-1 as well after losing to Hays, 14-20, in week one but then outscoring Dodge City, 52-35, for a win on Friday.

For the Bullpups, Owen Fetsch led the way as he completed 11 of 18 passes for 197 yards and four touchdowns.

McPherson jumped on Augusta early with a pair of scoring passes from Fetsch to Gavin Wedel of six yards and to Gunner Schumacher covering 35 yards in the first quarter. Add in a one-yard scoring dive into the end zone by Jayce Schriner and the Bullpups were up 21-3 at the end of the first.

Fetsch tossed a pair of 17-yard scoring passes to Cory Muehler in the second quarter and Isaac Barnett dashed in for a score from two yards out while Eli Clarke caught Augusta in the end zone for a safety, all adding up to a commanding 44-3 advantage for the Bullpups at the halftime break.

Augusta did find the end zone in the third quarter, but McPherson added a 20-yard scoring run by Isaac Barnett in the third and a 56-yard scoring pass from Carter Bengtson to Bishop Brown in the fourth to gain the final 47-point, 57-10 victory.

The Bullpups offense outgained the Orioles offense, covering 444 yards on 57 offensive snaps while Augusta only mustard 183 yards on 44 plays. McPherson was extremely strong on third downs as they converted seven of nine for a first down while holding Augusta to only gaining three first downs on ten third-down attempts.

Carlos German led the Bullpup ground attack with 72 yards on eight carries. The foursome of Bishop Brown, Blaise Hoover, Cory Muehler and Gunnar Schumacher all caught at least two passes with all gaining between 55-70 yards in the process.

Defensively, the Bullpups were led by Teegan Haines and Brock Richardson who both totaled nine on the evening as 18 players recorded at least one tackle in the contest.
