Battle Salina Lakewood, Mulvane

The McPherson Middle School seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups basketball team opened their 2023 season this week going 1-3 with games against Salina Lakewood and Mulvane.

On Tuesday with Salina Lakewood, the seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ team lost by 16, 36-20 as Kamryn Prescott led the team in scoring with nine while Caysen Blake had seven rebounds.

In the ‘B’ game, the Junior Lady Pups lost again 27-12 as Adeline Kramer and Zayna Busse led the team in scoring with four points each while Kramer and Izabell Klamczyunski each grabbed five rebounds.

On Thursday, the seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups went 1-1 against Mulvane.

In the ‘A’ game, McPherson scored their first win of the season, 36-24, on a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the contest. Hannah Wilgers and Caysen Blake led the team in scoring with each scoring nine while Everlee Buchman had eight.

The ‘B’ team stumbled, losing 48-4.

According to seventh-grade head coach Heidi Rickes, “In the ‘A’ game it was an all battle on both sides of the ball, and I am so proud of the girls and how they competed all 24 minutes. They earned every minute of this win. Hannah (Wilgers) had an amazing game coming up with the game winning free throw with 1.6 seconds to go in the game. It was an overall tremendous team effort and win.”
