MCPHERSON – For the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball teams, it was a busy week with three road games against Rose Hill, Prairie Hills and Wellington.

The seventh grade ‘A’ team Junior Lady Pups began the week in Rose Hill and scored a 19-point, 32-13 win as coach Heidi Ricke noted, “The girls had their most consistent game thus far in the season. Our defensive effort was top notch, and the girls executed our offense well.”

Caysen Blake hit double digits in scoring with 10 points while Kamryn Prescott chipped in with eight.

Coach Ricke continued her post Rose Hill reflections by adding, “Caysen (Blake) had a great game for us as she led the team in both points and rebounds. I am so proud of how the girls were able to make the adjustments they needed to as we faced a zone defense for the first time this season. It was a good team win and just an overall fun game to be part of.”

On Tuesday at Prairie Hills, the ‘A’ team won again with an impressive 21-point, 28-7 victory as Hannah Wilgers and Caysen Blake led the team in scoring with nine and eight points, respectively.

Closing out the week at Wellington, the ‘A’ team seventh graders stumbled with a 10-point, 17-27 loss as Hadley Bearly topped the team in points with five while three others scored four.

For the seventh grade ‘B’ team games, they scored a first of the season with a seven-point, 25-18 win at Rose Hill with Sophia Thomason leading the scorers with six, before losing by nine, 10-19 at Prairie Hills as five players each scored two points.

The ‘B’ Team closed out the week with a twelve-point, 16-28 loss at Wellington as Adeline Kramer had six and Zayna Busse scored five to lead the team.

Coach Ricke closed out her reflections on the Wellington game by saying, “Although both teams came away with a loss, as coaches we could not be prouder of the entire team. This has been a challenging week regarding our travel schedule and playing three games in four days. Ava Mendoza closed out the week with a very good game, scoring four and grabbing eight rebounds as she played very aggressive and smart basketball. Though the ‘B’ team lost as well, we could see a marked improvement.”

Overall, the seventh grade ‘A’ team is ow 3-2 while the ‘B’ team is just 1-4.

The upcoming week finds the seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups hosting Winfield and Ark City on Monday and Tuesday, respectively before going back on the road Thursday at Augusta.
