Finish 1-2 at Maize, 2-2 at El Dorado

McPHERSON – It was a busy few days for the McPherson Middle School seventh-grade volleyball teams as the ‘B’ team played in Maize on Saturday and both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams went to El Dorado on Monday, finishing 3-4 overall.
On Saturday, the ‘B’ team participated in the Maize Invitational where they lost Derby in straight sets (10-25, 18-25), then bounced back for a straight set win over Newton (25-19, 25-18). The Junior Lady Pups closed out the tournament pushing Hutchinson to three sets before losing (24-26, 25-23, 9-15) placing them sixth in the tournament.
“We started our day a little slow against Derby but then came back strong and grabbed a win against Newton,” noted ‘B’ team coach Amelia Broadfoot in her post tournament thoughts. “We fought hard but lost in an intense match with Hutchinson. Multiple girls stepped up today and had terrific games. Alani Rodriguez and Hadley Bearley both had quite a few service aces plus Alani had multiple kills. Our libero, Ella Wyssmann did a fantastic job in serve receives.”
On Monday, both the seventh-grade Junior Lady Pups ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams went to El Dorado for a triangular with El Dorado and Arkansas City.
The ‘A’ team took a straight loss to El Dorado before battling with Arkansas City for three sets to get a victory. With the split of games, the ‘A’ team now has a season mark of 10-5.
“It is hard to find words to describe our games,” explained head coach Destiny Espinoza. “When it comes down to it, we did not show up for our teammates, and we did not show up for ourselves. There were mistakes that could have been avoided with rotation errors, and many serves missed at pressing parts of the game. I know we got a win, but walking away from that does not settle well know we have a loss added to our record that was caused by our mistakes.”
The ‘B’ team ended up playing Arkansas City twice as El Dorado did not have enough players to have a ‘B’ team.
After losing a hard fought three set match in begin the day play with Arkansas City (26-24, 12-25, 14-16), the ‘B’ Junior Lady Pups powered back for a straight set (25-19, 25-23) win in the second matchup.
According to coach Amelia Broadfoot, “During the second game we fought back from nearly a 10-point deficit to win. Ella Wyssmann was our best passer today; she helped her team win with multiple perfect passes. Bayleigh Anderson had six service aces that helped our team comeback.”
The ‘B’ team is now 4-12 for the season.
