BENNINGTON – The Moundridge softball team traveled to Bennington where they split a doubleheader, winning game one 3-2 before losing game two 11-18.
In game one, the Lady Wildcats took an early 2-0 advantage after two innings before Bennington tied it at 2-2 going into the fifth where Moundridge added another run and hung on for the 3-2 victory.
Lela Winsor did a master job on the mound for the Lady Wildcats, holding Bennington to just one hit while walking six and striking out five on 117 pitches for the win.
Macy Kaminkow had two of the five team hits, and Winsor helped her pitching performance with a double.
“Lela (Winsor) pitched very well for us,” noted Lady Wildcat head coach Lynn Eichelberger. “Our defense played better, and we made the plays when we needed. Once again, the top of our lineup produced, and we scored just enough runs to win the game. Macy (Kaminkow) also had a good game both at the plate and defensively at first bast.”
The nightcap did not go as well for the Lady Wildcats as the fell behind 3-14 by the end of the third inning and still trailed 8-16 after four on the way to the final 11-18 loss.
Winsor again worked the mound and threw 144 pitches in the loss.
At the plate, the Lady Wildcats pounded out 14 hits including three from Macy Kaminkow and two each from Winsor, Sam Strausz, Mac Soden, and Izzy Durst. Soden and Winsor each hammered out doubles while Strausz pounded out a pair of triples as she and Mac Soden each had three runs batted in.
Coach Eichelberger concluded his reflections on the two games by saying, “As clean as the first game of the doubleheader was, the second game was the complete opposite. Defensively we did not make the routine plays that we needed and ended up with ten errors. We hit the ball better, especially the top four hitters in our lineup as they accounted for ten of the team’s 14 hits.”
