LOST SPRINGS – On Friday, the Elyria Christian girls won again at the Centre Invitational, this time beating Herington by 27, 47-20 to qualify for the championship game of the Invitational.

Now 6-5 on the season, winners of both four in a row and six of Lady Eagles last seven games, they will matchup with Marion in the invitational’s championship game. Marion will come into the game 4-6 for the season.

“This was a complete team win tonight that started with a lot of pressure defense,” explained Lady Eagle head coach Greg Fields. “We had Addison (Swenson) responsible for stopping one of the best players in our league and with the team providing incredible help, we held her to just three field goals for the night.”

After playing to a 5-5 tie at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles poured 25 points into the scorebook in the second quarter to take a commanding 30-10 lead heading into the halftime break. From there Elyria outscored Herington 17-10 in the second half to gain the final 27-point victory.

Talking about the beginning of the game, coach Fields said, “I was very happy with the energy that we brought throughout the game. We had a tough time settling down on offense in the first quarter with too many turnovers and not being patient on our shots. We then came out in the second quarter and got some quick transition points off turnovers which seemed to help settle the girls down.”

Grace Prescott had a huge night leading the Lady Eagles in scoring with 20 points while connecting on 70% of her shots. Joy Pyle just missed double digits with eight points.

Pyle led Elyria in the paint by grabbing six rebounds while Julia Allen and Carlie Joe Rohaus each pulled down five. Prescott and Addison Swenson had strong defense with each making four steals and Swenson leading the offense with five assists.

Concluding his thoughts on the game, coach Fields added, “Addison (Swenson) was a work horse tonight with her defense while having a calming presence on offense. She made some great assists and was consistent with good passes. Joy (Pyle) continues to improve under the basket, it is so much fun to see her getting a little more aggressive each game. Makenna (Cass) may not be the tallest player, but she earns every rebound by doing the  work before the ball comes down. Grace (Prescott) had a special night on offense as her speed really caused problems for Herington and she was outstanding at finishing fast breaks. Julia (Allen) has become a threat from outside and she knows how to find an open teammate. Carlie Joe (Rohaus) provided some great minutes off the bench and played very sound defense.”
